Why You Should Be Using Collagen Daily

If you've been hearing more and more about collagen lately, it's for a good reason. Collagen is one of those health kicks that is the real deal and is hopefully here to stay. It has amazing health benefits and is an easy to take supplement that you can easily add to your daily routine.

 

So what is collagen?

 

Collagen is a protein that makes up 1/3 of the protein content in our bodies and 70% of the protein in our skin. While it's already in our bodies, as we age the production of it starts to decline which is one of the reasons it's a good idea to supplement with it.

 

What's it good for?

  • Supporting hair, skin and nails

  • For joint health

  • To encourage skin elasticity and reduce the signs of aging

  • Improving digestion

  • As a protein source

Some claim it can help improve sleep, help fix leaky gut and boost metabolism. The jury is still out on those claims. For me personally I've definitely noticed some changes since beginning to supplement with it daily a year ago. My nails are incredibly strong. Like, can't bit the bastards off strong (not that I bite my nails but crazy strong). My digestion is on point! While I do supplement with a probiotic, I used to HAVE to take that probiotic daily to be regular. I can easily go a few days without having my probiotic for a few days and still be regular and without any digestive distress. My hair used to be thin, fine and brittle. Even with the damage I do to it now by bleaching it and wearing it up in a bun almost daily, it's healthier than it's ever been! I also notice it's thicker and I have less split ends even with only trimming it once or twice a year.

 
 

How do you take it?

Collagen peptides is a dissolvable powder that can be added to many liquids or recipes. It's nearly flavorless so won't change the taste of the beverage you're adding it to. I personally add it to my coffee or my suju green juice but also use it in muffins, breads, and smoothies quite often.

Orange Creamsicle Protein Smoothie

 

Ingredients

1-2 scoops collagen peptides

1 orange

1/3 frozen banana

1 tbsp. coconut butter

1 tsp. vanilla

1 cup cashew milk

1 cup ice

 

Blend and enjoy!

 

What brand do you prefer?

 

My personal favorite brand is Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides. I've tried some of the others but this is by far my favorite and one that I've been using for years now. As it's gained in popularity it's easier to find on the market and is even now carried at Costco in some parts of the country!
